Good morning everyone. Lots of big news coming at you today, so buckle up and get prepared.
By the way, for all of our new members, we have a podcast as well if you prefer to listen!
0:04- You could now pay the median household income in the United States with 3.7 Bitcoins
Bitcoin ($BTC) is now trading at a remarkable $18,321 per coin (as of midnight), and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon. Experts say that because supply is fixed, the demand can only continue to rise— especially as there are so many countries with unstable currency systems or authoritarian governments.
0:17- Biden has started naming senior White House staff as the standoff with Trump continues
Amongst the unstable transition of power, President-Elect Biden has started to name some of his senior officials, including his deputy chief of staff, Jen O’Malley Dillon, and Mike Donilon, who will be a senior advisor to the president. In addition, while Trump is blocking key transition meetings, several Pentagon officials have offered to meet with the Biden team off-site.
0:33- Yo, did you see my Fleet dude?
Yesterday, Twitter was the 6th large social media company to copy Snapchat’s story feature that was introduced in October 2013— over 7 years ago. These “Fleets” function the same as stories, and essentially allow for “24 hour tweets” that will disappear after time runs out. This move comes at one of the most competitive times in social media history, with a lot of companies competing for a small amount of consumer time.
0:52- Two day delivery on. . . drugs?
Bezos is at it again— Amazon announced yesterday that they would be getting into the pharmacy game with its “Amazon Pharmacy” service. Prime members will get their traditional extra perks such as two day delivery, and new discounts of up to 80% on generic drugs when paying without insurance. Traditional corner store pharmacies’ stocks dropped like it was hot after the press release. $WBA (Walgreens) and $CVS (go ahead and guess) were both down big on the news.
1:11- Spotify is making noise with Megaphone
Podcasts are the new hot form of media, and Spotify is investing a lot of money (i.e. $100m for Joe Rogan) into getting it right. This new acquisition, Megaphone, is a middleman for advertisers to work with podcast hosts in order to find the best content for users. If you listen to any podcasts on Spotify, expect to start hearing mid-roll ads similar to what YouTube has.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
