Good morning everyone, and happy Sunday! The real world is returning tomorrow, so enjoy this last little bit of the holiday season!
0:05- Bitcoin breaking records sounds like a broken record
As of right now, Bitcoin could lose half of its market value and still be above the level it was at on Thanksgiving ($16,500). Yes, you read that correctly - the cryptocurrency broke $33k early yesterday morning after breaking $30k less than six hours beforehand. To put that in perspective, to make the Forbes 400 list, you would only need 66.7k bitcoin, and that number is only going down. Experts remain bullish on the upside as well.
0:26- The amount of pirates in the world has gone down
And we’re not just talking about the ones that sail around in a boat with the jolly roger flying. Sites such as The Pirate Bay struggled this past year as traffic dropped by more than 1/3rd in 2020. Initially experts believed this drop to be due to the increased amount of media available through streaming services, but soon realized that Google had introduced new algorithms which dropped the ranking of sites in searches that have received takedown requests. This change has severely hampered the piracy industry.
0:49- Only missing by 450 isn’t that bad
Tesla ($TSLA) announced yesterday that it had delivered a record breaking 499,550 vehicles worldwide last year, just barely falling short of its goal of 500k. This achievement, which Elon Musk called a “major milestone” on Twitter, impressed investors with the resilience of the company, as the number was achieved despite a weaker than normal automotive demand, and the closure of their only US plant for a majority of the year.
1:08- Microsoft had a macro-hack
Microsoft recently confirmed on Thursday that it had downloaded software linked to the recent Russian backed SolarWinds hack. In their disclosure, they stated that the hackers had been able to view source code for their products, as well as access internal systems. They did however, deny that any changes had been made though, and stressed that no consumer data had been leaked during the unauthorized access.
1:25- 62 small businesses saved, and counting
Say what you want about Dave Portnoy and Barstool, but they’re doing something pretty incredible right now. Within the last three weeks they’ve raised over $17M and saved over 62 small businesses impacted by Covid lockdowns.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
