⏱The HOR with a buzzer beater
Soul is good for your soul, and C.R.E.A.M. (Cash Rules Everything Around Me)
Hey everyone! We hope you’re having a chill week so far and getting ready to (responsibly) celebrate Thursday night!
0:05- It’s hard to go broke when you’re charging ridiculous prices for textbooks, and yet...
Barnes and Noble Education (no longer affiliated with the normal book chain store) is facing even more cuts as textbook sales around the country are falling. Thomas Donohue, the CFO of B&N Education, has been making cuts since college campuses shut down in March, and is continuing to do so as many campuses are expected to stay shut down during the spring. Over the last quarter profits were down by 79.1%, and analysts within the company predict the trend will only get worse.
0:28- It’s officially crunch time in the House of Representatives
The House of Representatives voted on two crucial issues last night — the defense bill veto override, and the $2000 stimulus checks requested by President Trump. This veto override marks the first of Trump’s presidency, and although some Republicans voted to sustain the veto, the bill still passed by an overwhelming supermajority. The stimulus check increase also passed, and will be moved to the Senate for approval.
0:51- Pixar’s new movie, “Soul” has, well, Soul
In what was a relatively low profile release by Pixar standards, their new movie Soul hit Disney+ and select theaters (where open) this past weekend. So far it’s achieved near universal acclaim from fans and critics alike who are delighted at the story, which features Pixar’s first Black lead — a Jazz musician named Joe Gardner.
1:06- The most powerful policy maker? Money
In what is a surprise to literally no one, many bills this year were either passed (or in some cases killed) by extensive lobbying. The tech industry spent an especially large amount this year helping to pass California’s Prop 22, supporting Democratic candidates, and influencing privacy legislation. On Prop 22 alone, DoorDash, Lyft, Instacart, and Uber spent more than $200M, which was more than 10 times the amount of the opposition.
1:25- The feel good story of the day
Keith Walker, a 53 year-old homeless man in Atlanta, risked his life to rescue more than a dozen animals from a shelter after a fire engulfed the kitchen. He said, “My dog is my best friend, and I wouldn't be here without him, so I knew I had to save all those other dogs.” A GoFundMe has been set up to help and thank him.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
