Good morning everyone. We hope you’re ready for an action packed 90 Seconds...
0:04- Google a monopoly? Who would’ve thought
Yesterday afternoon, Texas filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google on behalf of a coalition of states, in which they accused Google of manipulating digital advertising markets. Essentially, they’re alleging that Google has used their dominant market share to control and rig pricing in advertising auctions. The company responded by denying the allegations, and stating that they operate in a “highly competitive market.”
0:20- Beserk Bitcoin Bump
The crazy cryptocurrency hovered right around $19,500 early yesterday morning before rallying to 20k... and then way past it. As of 5pm last night, bitcoin was already at $21,300 and still climbing. This marks the first time the coin has crossed the threshold, and investors are optimistic that it will keep climbing.
0:34- The tale of Facebook today: three features, one lawsuit
Facebook was taking headlines all over the place today. During their end of year meeting, they announced three key services — one that will rival Cameo and allow users to video chat with celebrities, one that will rival Angie’s list as a way to find and book services, and one that will utilize AI to summarize articles into bullet points. On the other side of the coin, Facebook launched a full page ad attacking Apple’s privacy features in the NYT, WSJ, and WaPo, claiming that by disallowing targeted ads, they’re hurting small businesses.
0:59- This merger is lit, bro
Two of the biggest Canadian weed producers, Tilray and Aphria, announced that they would be merging to form the biggest multinational marijuana producer by revenue ($874m). The deal is expected to close in Q2 2021, and will be a $3.9 billion merger. That’s a high number, yo.
1:12- You can now seriously game on your iPad
And we’re not talking about Candy Crush either. Today Google announced that they would be bringing Stadia to iOS devices in a beta. This means that any Stadia user can now play games like Cyberpunk, Assassin’s Creed, or Red Dead on their iPad.
1:24- Get out of the way, Usain Bolt
Phelan, a mixed breed rescue pup, is now the world’s fastest dog. In a 100 yard dash (which he finished in 6.346 seconds), he hit a top speed of 32.3mph. For reference, Usain Bolt’s top speed was under 28mph.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
