0:06- It’s a bit crazy they were first, innit?
The U.K. officially became the first Western nation to authorize the use of a Covid-19 vaccine when they granted emergency use of Pfizer’s shot yesterday. They announced that they will be vaccinating citizens in tiers decided by risk reduction that begins with front line health and social care workers and then essentially descends by age. The FDA will not be making a decision for the US until “a couple of days after” their meeting on December 10th.
0:21- This is a nightmare for shoppers who procrastinate
Yesterday UPS announced that they would be placing shipping restrictions on large retailers such as Gap ($GPS) and Nike ($NKE) for this upcoming holiday season. This decision comes as online orders have increased dramatically, and shippers around the nation are struggling to fulfill orders. In fact, UPS’ on-time delivery percentage dropped more than 6% during this past weekend alone. Essentially, if you want something before Christmas, you better order soon or ask Santa very nicely.
0:40- People around the US will now have to spend slightly less time in their basement
The CDC released a statement yesterday officially changing the protocol for a Covid-19 quarantine from 14 days down to a seven to 10 day period. In the same announcement, the CDC also recommending not traveling for the holiday season, but said that if travel was “necessary” that the best procedure would be to get a test one to three days before traveling, and then three to five days afterward, or if a test afterwards is not possible, then a quarantine instead.
1:01- Oh yay, another streaming service to pay for every month
Discovery Inc. ($DISCB) announced yesterday that they would be launching a streaming service called Discovery+ (I wonder where they got that name from). The service will be released on January 4th in the US, and will be $4.99 with ads, and $6.99 without. It will feature shows and content from TLC, Food Network, Discovery Channel, and Animal Planet. If you’re a current Verizon customer, you’ll also get the service free for a year.
1:21- The Fed & Treasury vs Congress
In their most direct statement to Congress to date, Fed Reserve Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin asked Congress to approve immediate Covid-19 relief funds, stating that it’s “very important” and that if nothing were to happen that the US could, “lose parts of the economy”.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
