Good morning everyone, and welcome to the best day of the week! Just one day left before the weekend!
0:05- How to find a vaccine
Although President Biden proclaimed that all adults in America will have the vaccine by the end of May, many people still don’t know how or when to get one. Luckily, there are people who want to help. One in particular built this site that scrapes the data from a collection of pharmacies to find available time slots. Although you most likely still have to qualify for your state’s current wave, once you’re eligible (check your state’s website — here’s Michigan’s for example), you’ll be able to sign up quickly.
0:29- From selling Bricks to selling to Square
Jay-Z is killing it. Only a week after he sold his champagne brand to LVMH, he’s now sold a majority stake in his music streaming service, Tidal, to Square Inc. for $297M in cash and stock. The deal struck will also see Jay-Z take a place on Square’s board of directors. Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and Square, said the deal was aimed at “finding new ways for artists to support their work.”
0:49- GM charges up its battery business
General Motors is reportedly looking at building a second battery factory with LG Chem before their first one (a $2.3Bn investment) is even finished. This news is not unexpected though — GM recently announced that they want to go fully electric before 2035, and creating their own batteries will help to dramatically lower costs. No specific location has been picked yet, but sources indicate that Tennessee is the most likely option at the moment, and that the plant could cost as much as $2.9Bn.
1:12- Apple’s App Store under antitrust allegations
Yesterday the UK announced that they were investigating Apple’s behavior towards app developers based on claims that Apple has squashed competition by imposing unfair restrictions on the only avenue for apps to be installed on their devices. Apple naturally disputes this claim saying that they treat all developers “fairly and equally.” The investigation will continue until September before any decisions are made.
1:28- A koala-ty story
Scientists recently rescued an orphaned koala in the wild that was without a hand. After more than a year of trying, they were able to build a comfortable prosthetic for the koala, who is aptly named “Triumph”.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
