Good morning everyone, and happy Saturday! We hope you have a relaxing weekend planned!
0:05- Four commas
Bitcoin now has a market cap of more than $1,000,000,000,000 after the cryptocurrency cruised past the $54k mark early yesterday afternoon before hitting a new ATH of ~$56,300 (+481% YoY). Although the barrier is not specifically significant to the coin itself, investors have long anticipated this landmark moment as it adds yet another measure of validity to the coin.
0:23- One shot to save us all?
Much like the lesson you learn after graduation, sometimes one shot is enough. A recent report out of Israel (n = 9,109) indicates that Pfizer’s vaccine is 85% effective after only one shot (following the ~14 day incubation period). This discovery has since led lawmakers to consider limiting vaccines to one shot per individual in an effort to achieve a higher level of immunity within a nation’s population. In addition, it’s been discovered that the vaccine can be safely distributed between -13ºF and 5ºF, much higher than the initially stipulated -112ºF through -76ºF.
0:48- The gig is up
Yesterday the U.K. supreme court ruled unanimously in favor of a group of Uber drivers in a landmark case for gig workers everywhere. In the ruling, the judges stated that the drivers were entitled to all of the same amenities of normal employees, including minimum wage and other benefits. Although the ruling currently only affects the drivers directly in the case, legal experts say that they expect to see this precedent change the status of all gig workers in the country (and possibly world) soon.
1:11- “I’m pleased to announce...”
LinkedIn announced yesterday that they are currently working on a new feature called, “Marketplaces” that will allow users to connect on freelancing or contracting deals, similar to sites such as Fiverr or Upwork. As of now, the feature is set to launch in September and will require LinkedIn Premium. All we know is that LinkedIn is a weird place.
1:26- Getting paid to live on a remote island and make art??
There’s a 91 acre island in the middle of Lake Superior called Rabbit Island, and its foundation is currently taking applications for its residency program which provides artists with $3k and the chance to live on the island for three weeks to solely create art. Not too bad of a job.
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you Monday bright and early!
