Good morning everyone. We hope you’re ready to start back up after a long weekend!
0:04- Theory isn’t always reality
But in the case of the Pfizer vaccine, it’s at least pretty dang close. Recent data from Israel (which leads the world with ~75 out of every 100 people vaccinated), shows that those who received the vaccine were 94% less likely to contract Covid, and 92% less likely to display “severe illness.” This wasn’t exactly a small study either — the two groups (one vaccinated, one not) were each 600k people in size, and included 430k people between the ages of 16 and 59, and 170k aged 60 or older. This was also the first study of its kind to confirm the high levels of effectiveness in the elderly due to the limited availability in clinical trials.
0:35- Everything is colder in Texas?
More than 2M people are without power in Texas after the state experienced a snowstorm that Jason Furtado, a professor of meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, calls a “really historic event.” With the presence of a “snownado”, he may be right. Unfortunately, this lack of power has caused grocery stores to close, Covid vaccine deliveries to be delayed, and air traffic to be shut down.
0:52- Even during a pandemic, businesses struggle to fill jobs
Despite unemployment rising during the lockdowns caused by Covid, some businesses which typically relied on foreign workers to function found themselves struggling to find workers. This was a direct byproduct of the drastic decrease in work visas and green cards allocated by the Trump administration in both April and June. President Biden has yet to announce any changes to the program, however late last week, more than 100 trade associations all signed a letter asking him to make changes.
1:15- Gaming Forecast: Lots of xClouds
Microsoft announced yesterday that it was testing new ways to run its xCloud gaming system, including one that would allow it to run in a web browser, opening it up to iOS devices. This means that you may soon be able to play your Xbox One S games on the go.
1:28- Done with the hustle and bustle of daily life?
Then this is good news for you. International Living has compiled a list of five Caribbean Islands that are affordable to live on. If you make the life change, send us a postcard!
Have a great rest of your day, and we’ll see you tomorrow bright and early!
