GM is planning on applying for a bank charter soon, a move that would allow them to grow their financing arm by taking deposits and extending loans. This may sound odd, but it’s not uncharted territory for GM who used to operate GMAC, a former subdivision of GM which used to do the same thing and nearly failed during the 2008 mortgage crisis — it was only revived by the government bailout.

Yesterday Amazon announced they were planning on pledging more than $500m in holiday bonuses for their front-line employees. Full time employees in December will automatically receive $300, while part time employees will get $150. This comes as they are expected to make more than $6.5bn this quarter on revenue of ~$120Bn.
Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, who has been responsible for their 20 year attempt to build a nuclear arsenal was assassinated yesterday after an ambush on his vehicle. Initial reports indicate that Israel was behind the attack, but no official comments have been made at this point in time. The Iranian government did declare the attack “an act of terror” though.
On Thanksgiving, the “Citgo 6”, a collection of U.S. oil executives were all sentenced to almost nine years in jail in Venezuela. This comes after their arrest on Nov 21st, 2017 for a multitude of charges that included embezzlement and fraud totalling more than $4bn. This trial and sentencing was closed to the press, but it was announced that the men would appeal, and Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State said six days ago that the U.S. would do the “utmost” to bring the men home.
After placing their kicker in a Covid quarantine earlier this week, Vanderbilt announced that they had recruited Sarah Fuller, the soccer star on the women’s team, to kick for them on Saturday. If it happens, she would be the first female to play in a Power 5 football game.
